Montreal REM’s extension

In 2023 I published a post on the new Montreal REM line. This week-end the REM’s original line was extended to its fullest extent, starting from its previously temporary city terminus at Gare Centrale, upon a former railroad alignment north west to Deux-Montagnes. The Prime Minister attended the free rides preview weekend – which is being held in lieu of the REM’s extension official opening later today (Monday 17th November 2025).

As well as a new extension the route provides a good number of interconnections with other routes in the centre of Montreal. The tunnel route through the centre was formerly that of the main line, now adapted to use REM exclusively. The new Edouard-Montpetit station is the deepest in Canada, 75 metres below surface. Pretty much the whole route northward to Deux-Montagnes (including the tunnel) is essentially main line converted to Metro. Its rebuilt throughout with double track and entirely new stations. There are further extensions in the pipeline – one is to Anse-A-L’Orme (expected to open Spring 2026) and the other to the airport during 2027.

Below are a couple of videos and posts covering the preview weekend. One can watch these below or on Youtube if desired. I have made sure these have subtitles – as many videos covering the REM extension preview weekend do not have those.

Translation: The opening of the Deux-Montagnes branch line is today! Welcome to all users discovering their 14 new stations. The REM teams will be on site all weekend to welcome you. For all the details of the inaugural program (show more).
