Whitchurch boat rescue #3

The two boats Sefton and Ganymede have been refloated. Actually they were refloated for a short while last night, however the short pound they were in was soon drained again just to be sure there was nothing untoward happening. Today the boats were refloated once again. The fact the water was drained might possibly have been to do with one of the cofferdams not doing its job as a second one was added this morning.

In Kieran and Lottie’s video its said there was a surprise that so many people were working at the site today. Its so un-Bridgewater like LOL!

Kieran and Lottie say they have a special film coming up which they describe as the ’cause video’ – they had been given special access to the site and they implicitly suggested this video will reveal the cause of the breach. At 3.07 on their latest video its said:

Um, I will have a what I believe to be the cause video coming up soon. Uh, I was given special access thankfully and uh, I mean, you can make your own minds up when I show you the video…

A bit cryptic but there we are!

In one of the videos yesterday (can’t remember which one) I spotted an area where a hole had been dug – this seems to be about where the second culvert that few have sussed exists (at least Kieran admitted he had not known about it after I posted a comment on his video informing there was a second culvert and CRT’s Julie Sharman had also discussed it). Its quite possible CRT (or their contractors) did a preliminary dig and conducted a preliminary examination of that very culvert with a camera and found it to be blocked. Just my thinking.

Both Ganymede and Sefton are now floating and will be taken away from the site. The above picture shows the moment these boats are connected to the canal once again. Kieran and Lottie Youtube.

Court on the Cut has just released this video showing Sefton being pulled from the breach site. The camera was at a different perspective near ground level so it gives a view of the work no other has got.

Update: 16.15pm on 17th January 2025.

Reports abound that two drones crashed into one another and that constituted a danger to the contractors/workmen undertaking the various operations to rescue the stricken boats. As is well known the rules covering the flying of drones in the UK were changed from 1st January 2026.

What went on is not exactly certain however it seems a rogue drone ventured onto the site and crashed into one being used by Kieran and Lottie Photography – their drone was hovering in the same exact spot the entire time when this other one collided.

I don’t use drones thus not familiar with the rules even though I’ve watched many Youtube drone videos. I was surprised to see the drones flying over everyone as the new year began – but I expect its perhaps because the drones involved were lighter than 100g. Having quickly looked at the new rules, its more complicated than that because even 900g drones can fly over people but not crowds. In some respects there is now greater freedom in conducting drone flights but it all depends on the size, weight, licensing, and UK class-marks.

Google Gemini says:

Significant UK drone rules changed on January 1, 2026, introducing mandatory Flyer IDs for drones over 100g, new UK Class Markings (UK0-UK6) for drones, Remote ID requirements for some, and updated night flying rules (green flashing light needed) to enhance safety and align with international standards. These changes affect registration, operator responsibilities, and where different drones can fly, requiring operators to get a Flyer ID (by passing a free CAA test) for drones 100g+ and an Operator ID for drones 250g+ (or 100g+ with a camera).

Anyway, here’s part of the report that was made on Drones UK.

Two drones collide above rescues workers in Whitchurch, who was flying the offending drone!
We all know the rules are annoying enough. We need to get our sleuthing hats on and figure out who caused the accident today at Whitchurch and get them reported to the CAA.
On YouTube “Kieran & Lottie Photography” were filming the rescue of one of the boats from the Whitchurch canal breach. You can see from their location they are maintaining line of sight and being careful, however their drone was hit by another that was clearly NOT flying safely
It could have been a lot worse, imagine they had actually crashed to the ground and hit the workers, we’d have out airspace closed immediately.

The full report is at Drones UK Facebook.

Some commentors on the Facebook page asserted the person posting the report had somehow taken things to extremes. No damage was done and no-one was hit – hence for some it was much ado about nothing – so why make a report? Had an accident occurred though and someone got injured there’s no doubt it would have been a different matter.

Court on the Cut said ‘the air was full of drones and people were flying everywhere, there was a group of 5-6 on the other end where we’re saying where we were, height etc but there were people flying in from across the fields and roads etc. there’s no way any of the has VLOS as it was misty.’

The rogue drone was captured very briefly after it collided with Kieran and Lottie’s drone. Screencap from Youtube.

On some of the Youtube videos I could see four drones flying at different elevations – all trying to get the best shots possible.

As Court on the Cut asserts, there were others besides those listed flying drones across the fields from the roads which might indicate some errant amateur was at work.
